Thomas Quasthoff est aujourd’hui l’un des chanteurs les plus demandés de sa génération. Les critiques font état non seulement de son charisme et de son talent mais aussi d’une grande force émotionnelle, d’expressivité et d’intelligence. A 13 ans, il a commencé par prendre des cours particuliers avec les professeurs Charlotte Lehmann et Hubert-Contwig (pour la musicologie) à Hannovre. Après des études de droit à l’Université de Hannovre, Thomas Quasthoff a travaillé pour la Radio d’Allemagne du Nord (NDR) en tant que présentateur. Depuis 1996, il est professeur au département vocal de l’Académie de Musique de Detmold en Allemagne. <p> Les nombreux prix nationaux et internationaux reçus par Thomas Quasthoff attestent de son talent : 1er Prix du Concours ARD (télévision allemande) à Munich en 1988, Prix Chostakovitch à Moscou en 1996 et le Prix du Hamada Trust/Scotsman Festival (Festival International d’Edimbourg) en 1996. Depuis, Thomas Quasthoff est reconnu dans le monde entier comme l’un des meilleurs chanteurs de lieder et d’oratorios. <p> En 1995, Thomas Quasthoff a fait ses débuts aux Etats-Unis au Festival Bach de l’Oregon et au Japon avec l’Académie Bach sous la direction de Helmut Rilling avec lequel il a effectué une tournée en Amérique du Sud à la fin de l’année. En 1996, il a participé au Festival de Musique de Schleswig-Holstein, au Festival de Tours, et s’est produit en récital à Paris et à Madrid. En août 1996, Thomas Quasthoff a chanté le War Requiem de Britten avec le Royal Scottish National Orchestra dirigé par Donald Runnicles au Festival d’Edimbourg et a donné un récital aux Jeux Paralympiques d’Atlanta. <p> Les points phares de la saison 1997/1998 ont été La Création de Haydn donnée avec l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Berlin sous la direction de Sir Simon Rattle. Au Festival Saito Kinen (Japon), Thomas Quasthoff a chanté La Passion selon Saint-Matthieu sous la direction de Seiji Ozawa et à Tokyo le War Requiem de Britten dirigé par Msitslav Rostropovich. <p> Ses projets futurs lui donneront l’occasion de se produire au Festival Bach de l’Oregon (Messe de Krzysztof Penderecki), à Boston (Das Lied von der Erde de Mahler avec Ben Heppner dirigé par Seiji Ozawa en octobre 1998), à Paris (Kindertotenlieder de Mahler avec l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France dirigé par Marek Janowski en octobre 1998), à New-York (Des Knaben Wunderhorn de Mahler dirigé par Sir Colin Davis en novembre 1998). Il chantera également Die Winterreise de Schubert avec le pianiste Charles Spencer à Paris en novembre 1998 et en tournée au Japon en décembre 1998 ainsi que le Requiem de Brahms sous la direction de Daniel Barenboim à Chicago et à Berlin en février 1999. <p> Thomas Quasthoff a enregistré pour EMI-Electrola, Philips, BMG Classics et Bayer-Records. Son enregistrement des Lieder de Schumann chez BMG Classics a remporté le Grand Prix Gabriel Fauré de l’Académie du Disque Lyrique à Paris. En 1995 est paru un enregistrement des Lieder de Schubert sur les textes de Goethe (avec le pianiste Charles Spencer) et, en 1996, un enregistrement de Fidélio de Beethoven (dans le rôle de Don Fernando) sous la direction de Sir Colin Davis. Son dernier CD comprenant des Arias de Mozart vient d’être édité chez BMG ; cet enregistrement a été récompensé par un Diapason d’Or. Au printemps 1998, Thomas Quasthoff a enregistré Die Winterreise de Schubert (avec le pianiste Charles Spencer) pour le label BMG ainsi que Des Knaben Wunderhorn de Mahler avec Anne-Sophie von Otter, dirigé par Claudio Abbado pour Deutsche Grammophon.

Today, Thomas QUASTHOFF is one of the most sought-after singers of his generation. The critics cite not only his charisma and his talent, but also an immense emotional power, expressivity and intelligence. At thirteen, he began by taking individual lessons with Charlotte Lehmann and Hubert-Contwig (for musicology) in Hannover. After studying Law at Hannover University, Thomas QUASTHOFF worked as a presenter for North German Radio (NDR).
