Michel PLASSON est né à Paris dans une famille de musiciens. Il travaille très jeune le piano avec Lazare Lévy, et reçoit ensuite une formation de percussionniste au Conservatoire de Paris, où il obtient un 1er Prix. Il se tourne ensuite vers la direction d’orchestre et remporte, en 1962, le 1er Prix du Concours International de Besançon. Il étudie par la suite aux Etats-Unis avec Eric Leinsdorf, Pierre Monteux et Léopold Stokowski. De retour en France en 1968, il est nommé « Directeur Musical » de l’Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, et en 1973, il est nommé Directeur Artistique du Théâtre du Capitole, poste qu’il occupe pendant 10 ans. A la tête de cet orchestre, devenu « Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse » en 1980, Michel PLASSON a hissé la ville de Toulouse au niveau de capitale musicale, depuis maintenant plus de trente ans. Serviteur de la musique française, Michel PLASSON a encouragé la musique contemporaine en commandant régulièrement des œuvres qu’il a créé avec l’Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, en France ou lors de tournées à l’étranger. Michel PLASSON défend aussi le patrimoine français à travers les enregistrements qu’il a réalisé avec l’Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse pour EMI CLASSICS (enregistrements qui ont obtenu régulièrement de nombreux grands prix internationaux). Des « Victoires de la Musique Classique » ont été décernées régulièrement à Michel PLASSON et à l’Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse : notamment la « Victoire » du Chef d’Orchestre de l’Année en 1993 et 1996. La « Victoire » de l’Enregistrement Classique de l’Année leur a été décernée en 2004 avec l’intégrale de « CARMEN » de Georges BIZET {avec Angela GEORGHIU et Roberto ALAGNA} : enregistrement EMI CLASSICS. Pendant 5 ans, Michel Plasson est GMD de la Philharmonie de Dresden avec laquelle il a, pendant cette période, effectué de nombreuses tournées internationales et aussi fait de nombreux enregistrements (Brahms, Wagner, Liszt, Borodine…) Récemment, Michel PLASSON a dirigé une série de représentations de « CARMEN » à l’Opéra de Gènova (Italie), Zurich (Suisse), Rome (Italie) et à la Scala de Milan ; ainsi qu’une nouvelle production de « WERTHER » à l’Opéra de Copenhague (Danemark), de « FAUST » à l’Opéra de Turin (Italie), et des « DIALOGUES DES CARMELITES » également à l’Opéra de Zurich. Il a également dirigé deux concerts au Théâtre du Châtelet à Paris, avec l’Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse. Au programme « WERTHER » de Jules MASSENET (en oratorio) ; ainsi qu’un concert à Moscou, avec l’Orchestre National de Russie. Il vient de faire récemment une tournée en CHINE avec la Filarmonica Toscanini de Parme (Italie). Dernièrement, Michel PLASSON a dirigé deux concerts avec l’Orchestre de Paris (Janvier 2005), en hommage à André JOLIVET. Début Février 2005, il a été invité pour diriger un concert à Moscou, avec l’Orchestre National de Russie. Il retournera à Moscou, en Janvier 2006, à l’invitation du Tchaïkovsky Symphony Orchestra. En avril 2005, il a effectué une tournée triomphale au JAPON avec l’Orchestre de Paris. Il a également été invité à diriger l’Orchestre d’Oslo (Avril 2005), l’Orchestre de Parme et de Montréal (Mai 2005), le Gewandhaus de Leipzig (Juin 2005), « THAIS » de Jules MASSENET au Konzerthaus de Vienne, en version de concert (Juin 2005). Il faut noter également que Michel PLASSON a dirigé une reprise des « CONTES D’HOFFMANN »de J. OFFENBACH et « CARMINA BURANA » de Carl ORFF, aux Chorégies d’Orange (Juillet 2005) qui le réinvitent d’ores et déjà pour juillet 2006 pour une production d’Aïda. Cette année, il dirige de nouveau à Oslo, ainsi qu’à l’Opéra d’Hambourg et que l’orchestre de Hambourg et la Philharmonie de Rotterdam. En 2006, il dirigera notamment une production d’Hamlet à l’Opéra de Genève, une production des Troyens à Strasbourg. Il sera également l’invité du Tchaïkovsky Symphony Orchestra à Moscou, il dirigera aussi à Lisbonne et de nouveau à Oslo. Michel PLASSON est Officier de la Légion d’Honneur, Commandeur des Arts et Lettres et Commandeur de l’Ordre National du Mérite.

Michel Plasson was born in Paris into a family of musicians. He was taught to play the piano by Lazare Lévy at a very early age and later trained as a percussionist at the Paris Conservatoire where he was awarde with 1st prize. He then took up conducting, coming 1st Besançon’s International Competition in 1962. Later on he was study in the United States with Eric Leinsdorf, Pierre Monteux and Léopold Stokowski. He was named Musical Director of Toulouse’s «Orchestre du Capitole» upon returning to France in 1968. As head of the orchestra (known as the «Orchestre National du Capitole» de Toulouse from 1980 onwards), Michel Plasson hoisted Toulouse to the level of music capital : a title it has coveted for over thirty years now. As a great defender of French music Michel Plasson does everything he can to encorage contemporary music, regularly leading works he has created with the «Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse» in France and during tours abroad. He also defends French heritage through recordings made with the «Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse» for EMI CLASSICS (recordings which regularly obtain a great number of International prizes). Michel Plasson and the «Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse» regularly win the {Victoires de la Musique Classique} such as the 1993 and 1996 «Orchestra conductor of the year» wards. In 2004, Michel Plasson and the «Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse» have won yet again, a Classical Recording of the Year award for their complete version of «CARMEN» by Georges Bizet (with A. Georghiu an R. Alagna) : an EMI CLASSICS recording. Michel Plasson recently conducted a series of «CARMEN» performances in the Opera houses of Geneva, Zurich, Rome and Milan. Also worth noting : his new production of «WERTHER» at the Opera house in Copenhague and «FAUST» at the Opera house in Turin. He has also recently conducted two concerts with the «Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse» at the «Theâtre du Châtelet» in Paris : a programme consisting of «WERTHER» by Jules Massenet (an oratorio) ; as well as a concert in Moscow with the National Russian Orchestra. He also alternately conducted a series of representations of the «DIALOGUES DES CARMELITES» by F. Poulenc and «CARMEN» by G. Bizet at the Opera house in Zurich. Also worth remembering : Michel Plasson conducted two concerts with the Orchestre de Paris at the Mogador Theatre (January 2005) in tribute to André Jolivet. He made a very successful tour in Japan (April 2005) also with the Orchestre de Paris. He conducted a series of concerts with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra (November 2004 and April 2005) where he is already reinvited for the next season, with the Leipzig Gewandhaus (June 2005), in Vienna, in Parma… He has also conducted a production of the Tales of Hoffmann by J. Offenbach at the Chorégies d’Orange and also Carmina Burana by C. Orff. Michel Plasson is also already reinvited there for 2006 ands will conduct a production of Aïda. This year he will conduct the Oslo Philharmonic, he will be the guest of the Hamburg Opera House and Orchestra, of the Rotterdam Philharmonic… In 2006 he will conduct a production of Hamlet at the Geneva Opera House, of les Troyens in Strasbourg and will also be the guest, among others, of the Tchaïkovsky Symphony Orchestra, go to Lisboa… Michel Plasson has been awarded the following honorary titles : Officer of the Legion of Honour, Commander of Arts and Literature and Commander of the National Order of Merit. .
