Sir Colin est, depuis 1995, le Chef Principal du London Symphony Orchestra (LSO). Il est également Chef Honoraire de la Staatskapelle de Dresde. La saison dernière a débuté avec les Proms où Sir Colin a dirigé un orchestre composé d’étudiants de la Julliard School of Music de New York et de la Royal Academy of Music de Londres. Il a ensuite dirigé la Symphonie Kullervo de Sibelius et la Première Symphonie de Walton avec le LSO à Londres et à New York. Sir Colin a aussi travaillé avec le New York Philharmonic, le Boston Symphony Orchestra, le Czech Philharmonic, le Royal Concertgebouw, la Staatskapelle de Dresde et l’Orchestre National de France. Il a dirigé le Dream of Gerontius d’Elgar, la Missa Solemnis, la Messe en do et Fidelio de Beethoven avec le LSO. Sir Colin a récemment dirigé le Mariage de Figaro au Covent Garden, puis la Flûte enchantée avec le LSO en Espagne. Cette saison, Sir Colin dirigera Roméo et Juliette de Berlioz avec l’Orchestre National de France à Paris. Puis il dirigera L’Enfance du Christ de Berlioz et le Messie d’Haendel avec le LSO en décembre. Durant l’année à venir, il dirigera le Boston Symphony Orchestra et le New York Philharmonic, avant de retourner à Londres pour le Benvenuto Cellini de Berlioz avec le LSO en juin et, en juillet, Cosi fan Tutte de Mozart au Covent Garden. Sir Colin Davis a beaucoup enregistré avec Philips, BMG et Erato. L’enregistrement de Falstaff avec le LSO a remporté l’an dernier le meilleur Opera Grammy. Avec le LSO conduit par Sir Colin, viennent de paraître les enregistrements Live de Ma Vlast de Smetana, de la Symphonie Kullervo de Sibelius, de la Première Symphonie de Walton et du Dream of Gerontius d’Elgar. Les enregistrements de la Missa Solemnis et de Fidelio de Beethoven devraient sortir assez tôt dans le courant de l’année 2007. Sir Colin a reçu de nombreuses récompenses à travers le monde, en France, Italie, Allemagne et Finlande. Plus récemment, il a été nommé Membre de l’Ordre des Companions of Honour durant les Queen’s Birthday Honours en 2001. Sir Colin a également reçu un Brit Award ainsi que, des mains de la Reine d’Espagne à Madrid en 2003, le Yehudi Menuhin Prize pour son travail avec les jeunes. Durant sa carrière, Sir Colin a dirigé le BBC Scottish Orchestra puis, en 1959, rejoint la Wells Opera House de Sadler. Il a passé quatre ans, de 1967 à 1971, comme Chef Principal du BBC Symphony Orchestra. En 1971, il devient le Directeur Musical du Royal Opera House Covent Garden et aussi, en 1972, le principal Chef invité du Boston Symphony Orchestra. De 1983 à 1992, il est à la tête du Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra ; de 1998 à 2003, il est le principal Chef invité du New York Philharmonic ; il devient Chef Honoraire de la Staatskapelle de Dresde en 1990. Sir Colin est né à Weybridge, dans le Surry, en 1927.

Biography :

Sir Colin has been the Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) since 1995 and is also Honorary Conductor of the Dresden Staatskapelle. Last season began with a Proms Concert with Sir Colin conducting an orchestra of students from the Juilliard School of Music (New York) and the Royal Academy of Music (London). He then performed Sibelius’ Kullervo Symphony and Walton’s First Symphony with the LSO in London and New York. Sir Colin also worked with the NYP, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic, Concertgebouw, Dresden Staatskapelle and Orchestre National de France. He gave performances of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius, Beethoven Missa Solemnis, Mass in C and Fidelio with the LSO. Sir Colin Recently conducted Mozart Marriage of Figaro at Covent Garden and then Magic Flute with the LSO in Spain. This season Sir Colin will be conducting Berlioz Romeo & Juliet with the Orchestre National de France in Paris and then Berlioz L’enfance du Christ and Handel’s Messiah with the LSO in December. In the new year he is appearing with Boston Symphoy Orchestra and New York Philharmonic before returning to London for Berlioz Benvenuto Cellini in June with the LSO and Mozart Cosi fan Tutte at Covent Garden in July. Sir Colin Davis has recorded widely with Phillips, BMG and Erato. Falstaff with the LSO won the Best Opera Grammy last year. LSO Live have recently released Sir Colin’s recordings of Smetana’s Ma Vlast, Sibelius’ Kullervo Symphony, Walton’s First Symphony and Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius. Beethoven Fidelio and Missa Solemnis will be released early in 2007. Sir Colin has been awarded international honours by Italy, France, Germany and Finland. Most recently he was named a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2001. Sir Colin has received Brit Awards and was given the Yehudi Menuhin Prize for working with young people by the Queen of Spain in Madrid in 2003. During his career Sir Colin conducted the BBC Scottish Orchestra, moved on to Sadler’s Wells opera House in 1959 and spent four years as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1967 to 1971. He became Music Director of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in 1971 and also Principal Guest Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1972. Sir Colin spent the years 1983-1992 with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, was Principal Guest Conductor of the New-York Philharmonic from 1998 to 2003 and has been Honorary Conductor of the Dresden Staatskapelle since 1990. Sir Colin Davis was born in Weybridge, Surry in 1927.
