Biographie :

Née à Bucarest, la Roumaine Michaela Martin compte parmi les meilleurs violonistes de sa génération. Elle a été formée, dès l’âge de cinq ans, par Stefan Gheorghiu, lui-même élève de George Enescu et de David Oistrach. Deuxième prix à 19 ans au Concours Tchaikovsky à Moscou, Mihaela Martin est également lauréate des Concours Tibor Varga (Sion), Montréal et Bruxelles (Reine Elisabeth 1980). Mais c’est surtout son premier prix au concours d’Indianapolis, en 1982, qui lança la jeune violoniste sur la scène internationale. Commencent alors les grandes tournées de concerts, aux Etats-Unis et en Europe, dont un début au Carnegie Hall. Soliste demandée, appréciée pour sa musicalité et le tempérament de son jeu, Mihaela Martin se produit avec des orchestres tels que le BBC Symphony, le Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, les symphoniques de Montreal, Rotterdam, Göteborg, Bamberg, Bucarest, l’Orchestre du Mozarteum de Salzburg, le Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, sous la direction de chefs tels que Kurt Masur, Neeme Järvi, Ferdinand Leitner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Charles Dutoit.. Dans le domaine de la musique de chambre, la violoniste roumaine a pour partenaires Yuri Bashmet, David Geringas, Boris Pergamenschikow, Frans Helmerson, Pavel Gililov, Martha Argerich, Itamar Golan, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Gérard Caussé... Elle se produit dans les festivals de Khumo, Korsholm (Finlande), Prades, Umea (Suède), Verbier (Suisse), Portogruaro (Italie), Kytakiushu (Japon), Schleswig Holstein, Delft et Isräel. Parmi ses enregistrements, signalons le double concerto de Brahms avec le violoncelliste Frans Helmerson, l’intégrale des conceros pour violon de Mozart avec les « Virtuoses de Bucarest » et l’intégrale des sonates pour violon d’Enescu. Mihaela Martine joue un violon J.B. Guadagnini de 1748. Elle est professeur à la Musikhoschule Köln depuis 1982.

Romanian-born Mihaela Martin has achieved the reputation of being one of the most outstanding violin virtuosos of her generation.
She began to study violin with her father at the age of five, and later went to study with Prof.Stefan Gheorghiu, who had been himself a pupil of George Enescu and David Oistrach. Ms.Martin has won numerous international competitions,beginning with the Second Prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow when she was 19 and followed by top prizes in Montreal,Sion,Brussels.Her First Prize win at the First International Violin Competition in Indianapolis led to a steady international career. Her debut in Carnegie Hall,New York,was described by New York Times as ''one of the most exciting debut concerts of the year'',and the Washington Post wrote after her Recital at the Library of Congress: ''Mihaela Martin remains to ornament the music world for years...(She) played with the energy and virtuosity that are prerequisited for success.Her concentration is absolute,she is sure of herself and,above all,has imagination.''
Ms.Martin is a sought after soloist with a very large repertoire.Among the orchestras she has performed with are: BBC Symphony,the Royal Philharmonic,the Montreal Symphony,Mozarteum Salzburg,Gewandhaus Leipzig,Holywood Bowl,with conductors such as Kurt Masur,Nikolaus Harnoncourt,Charles Dutoit,Neeme Järvi. Known for her intellectual and musical qualities,she is constantly invited to chamber music festivals all over the world,where she plays with musicians like Marta Argerich, Yuri Bashmet,Elisabeth Leonskaja,Nobuko Imai,Leon Fleischer,Menahem Pressler, to name just a few. She has performed for Radio and TV and recorded on CDs. Ms.Martin is since 2003 also founder member of the Michelangelo String Quartet together with Stephan Picard,Nobuko Imai and Frans Helmerson,with whom she tours extensively in Europe and Asia. One of their main projects is the recording of the whole cycle of Beethoven Quartets for "Pan Classics"in Switzerland.
This past season she performed as a soloist and in chamber music festivals in Italy, Norway, England, France, Israel, Germany, Greece, Romania,Switzerland. Mihaela Martin holds professorships at the Musikhochschule Koeln,Germany,and at the Haute Ecole de Musique in Geneva and gives masterclasses all over the world.
She is regularly invited as member of the Jury of International Competitions such as Queen Elisabeth in Brussels, Indianapolis (USA), Enescu
